September Recycling Event Will Be Last One For Latex Paint, Aerosol Products, Propane Canisters – Kane County Connects

The Kane County recycling event on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021, will be the last event at which you can recycle paint, aerosol cans, and small propane canisters. If you are considering cleaning out the garage before winter, this is a great opportunity to get rid of all these things responsibly.

In addition to the above materials, Kane County will also be recycling electronics, clothing, and books at this September event.

But this article will focus on the latex paint (collected by ePaint Recycling) and aerosol cans and propane canisters (collected by Flat Can Recycling) to provide more information on what we’ll be taking and how and why. Next week’s article will cover the other items.

The best thing about this Latex Paint recycling program is that the liquid latex paint collected by Kane County partner, ePaint Recycling, (in quart, gallon, and 5-gallon containers) is recycled again as liquid latex paint and reused rather than landfilled.

Please do not mix colors together to consolidate the number of cans you are bringing.ePaint wants to keep the integrity of the colors to ensure product excellence and to successfully reuse the greatest volume. Check outthe colors they produce.

However, if you are trying to reduce the number of cans you need to pay for, you can blend like-colors together in one can, like all the blues into one can, all of the whites into another can, and all of the greens into yet another separate can, and so forth.

Tip: Do not bring dried out latex paint, as that can simply go in your trash can at home. To dispose from home, you must take lids off, but you can put one or two cans per week in your regular trash. If you bring dried paint to a recycling event, you will pay ePaint $3 a gallon to transport it and then landfill it for you, which obviously does not make sense.

Flat Can Recycling is the company that the county works with at these events to collect and recycle aerosol products including spray paint, auto products, lubricants, industrial products, insecticides, food products, household cleaners, and personal care products for responsible disposal. A recycling fee applies of $1 per aerosol can, payable by residents.

Additionally, Flat Can Recycling has recently extended its list of collection items to include 1-pound single-use propane tanks (sizes accepted: 14.1 ounce, 14.4 ounce, 16.0 ounce, 16.4 ounce). These items are very challenging to transport and recycle so the pricing structure is different ($3 per 1-pound propane tank).

Thin-walled propane cylinder recycling involves the safe extraction and collection of propane gas, which is then returned to the market to replace other commercial propane.

This “reclamation” is considered a higher form of treatment on the EPA Waste Management Hierarchy because it conserves the raw materials and energy that would otherwise be needed to produce similar virgin products. The metal from the propane cylinders is compacted and safely recycled as scrap steel.
