The Enchanted Village is back at Jordan’s Furniture as holiday tradition returns Thursday after COVID hiatus

The Enchanted Village is back — opening to the public at the Jordan’s Furniture in Avon on Thursday.

The historic holiday village, the Polar Express 4D ride, the laser LITE show, the indoor ice skating rink and Santa Claus will all make their return, according to WBZ.

The Village was originally on display in the 1960s and 1970s in Jordan Marsh’s Downtown Crossing store and quickly became part of New England holiday tradition, the furniture company said in a press release.

But in 1972, the holiday experience closed for 18 years until its rebirth in 1990. When Macy’s purchased Jordan Marsh in 1998, the Village was sold to the City of Boston to be displayed at City Hall Plaza, according to the release. In 2003, lack of funding forced the Village to move to the Hynes Convention Center and by 2006, Boston stopped showing the village all together.

In 2009, everything changed when the display went up for auction.

“Jordan’s Furniture purchased the surviving pieces of the Enchanted Village at auction in May of 2009 and restored the vintage collection to its former glory. The Village is on permanent display here in Avon, and is open for all to enjoy during the holiday season,” the company wrote in the release. “Whether you’re reliving your youth or starting a new family tradition, Jordan’s hopes your holidays are as enchanting as the Enchanted Village.”

The beloved holiday tradition was closed last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but is back in 2021 with a new surprise.

This year, the Massachusetts furniture store added an indoor tube slide to the exhibit.

“Enjoy a thrilling ride in a colorful inner tube down a smooth slide – it’s like a water slide without the water, or a backyard hill without the snow! This new Enchanted Village attraction is a beautiful wooden structure that’s about 72 feet long by 16.5 feet wide for a quick gliding ride. It’s an easy climb back uphill, so you can slide down at least a few more times,” the press release read.

While the slide is open to all ages, it has minimum height requirement of 40 inches.
